The Cognitive Friction Trap: Why 'Clever' Copy Kills Inbound Conversions
Why clever marketing copy triggers buyer resistance. How human cognitive bandwidth filters out jargon, and how to use Customer Language Mining to write effortless, high-converting copy.
Buyer Psychology & AI Distribution Strategist

The biggest mistake I see ambitious founders and marketing teams make is trying to sound smart.
They sit in a room, brainstorm poetic metaphors, and write headlines like:
"Transforming Synergistic Paradigms for Next-Generation Scalability."
They hit publish, feel proud of how sophisticated it sounds, and then get met with dead silence. Zero inquiries. Zero demos. Zero sales.
Here is the uncomfortable truth about human psychology: The human brain does not buy what it has to decode.
🧠 The Biological Survival Filter
The human brain makes up roughly 2% of body weight, but consumes over 20% of its daily caloric energy. To keep you alive, the brain has evolved one primary survival mechanism: energy conservation.
Whenever a potential buyer lands on your website or reads your social post, their brain is running an instantaneous sub-conscious scan asking:
- "Does this solve an immediate, painful problem I have today?"
- "How much mental energy do I need to burn to understand this?"
If your copy forces them to think, interpret, or translate corporate jargon, their brain classifies it as cognitive friction and immediately bounces.
Clever confuses. Clarity converts.
⚖️ The Contrast: "Clever" vs. "Clear"
When you write to be clever, you write for your ego. When you write to be clear, you write for the customer's relief.
Look at the difference in cognitive resistance:
| The "Clever" Ego Copy (High Friction) | The "Clear" Behavioral Copy (Zero Friction) | | :--- | :--- | | "Revolutionizing enterprise communication through bespoke automated workflows." | "We stop your inbound demo leads from sitting uncontacted in a CRM queue for 24 hours." | | "Unleash exponential digital product velocity with our proprietary methodology." | "How to turn the questions your clients already ask into a £47 digital template in one weekend." | | "Next-generation data telemetry for commercial optimization." | "A single Looker Studio dashboard that shows exactly where users drop off before paying." |
In the second column, the reader’s brain does not have to do any translation work. They recognize their own daily reality instantly.
⛏️ The Remedy: Customer Language Mining
So how do you find the words that eliminate cognitive friction?
You don't guess them in isolation. You mine them directly from the customer.
In The Pull System, I use a repeatable 3-step technique called Customer Language Mining:
Step 1: Find Where Pain is Documented Publicly
Go to where your target audience complains when products fail them:
- 1-star and 2-star reviews of competitor books, courses, or SaaS tools on Amazon, G2, or Trustpilot.
- Unfiltered Reddit threads in niche communities.
- YouTube comment sections under popular tutorial videos.
Step 2: Extract the "Visceral Vocabulary"
Filter out general complaints ("This was bad") and look for specific emotional phrases:
- "I spent 3 hours trying to connect the webhook and gave up."
- "I'm tired of guessing what my manager actually wants to see on Monday morning."
- "Every template I downloaded felt like it was built for a 100-person company, not a solo operator."
Step 3: Mirror the Vocabulary Verbatim
Take those exact phrases and place them at the top of your landing page or content hook.
When a buyer reads your copy and sees the exact sentence they muttered to themselves yesterday afternoon, they don't think you're selling to them. They think you are reading their mind.
🎯 The Iron Law of Inbound Pull
If you want people to come to you without having to aggressively chase them:
- Diagnose their awareness stage first (Are they problem-aware or product-aware?).
- Strip out every adjective that exists only to make you sound impressive.
- Speak in plain, 10th-grade English about the bleeding-neck problem they are desperate to fix.
When you remove the friction, conversion takes care of itself.
